The heart and soul of Montgomery EMS are its people. Our volunteers include working professionals, parents, retirees, college students, and high school students. Many members live or work in Montgomery, and others come from nearby communities to serve with us.
Volunteer Positions
Whether you are exploring healthcare, giving back locally, or looking for meaningful public service, there is a path to contribute.
EMT
EMTs provide Basic Life Support and direct patient care, and work closely with drivers and other responders during emergency calls.
DRIVER
Drivers support ambulance operations, transport, scene support, and response readiness during calls and standby coverage.
ASSOCIATE
Associates support administrative functions, communications, and operational support that keep the squad effective and reliable.
CADET
Selective Program for students ages 16 to 17. Cadets work under direct supervision of an officer or adult certified EMT while on duty and gain early exposure to emergency medical service standards.

EMT
EMTs are state licensed professionals who provide pre-hospital, medical basic life support. No prior medical training or experience is necessary!

Pass a background check

Hold a state EMT license or be willing to complete EMT training

EMT course includes approximately 210 hours of instruction

Montgomery EMS pays for EMT training

After licensure, complete additional rigorous field and skills training

Commit to a regular weekly pre-assigned shift, generally 6 to 12 hours

State-funded EMT training requires a 3-year commitment

Maintain general membership participation expectations

DRIVER
Our ambulances are operated by our Drivers. Drivers go through an internal training to operate our vehicles.

Commit to a regular weekly pre-assigned shift, generally 6 to 12 hours

In-house training includes classroom EVOC content, hospital runs, cone course drills, and shadowing experienced drivers on calls

ASSOCIATE
Members who provide support services, Associate members shall be individuals who have an interest in serving, but are not qualified or do not wish to be active members or drivers.

Contribute to squad readiness without serving as an EMT or Driver

Participation expectations are based on assigned support responsibilities

Background check may be required depending on role responsibilities

CADET PROGRAM
Montgomery EMS offers a selective Cadet Program for students ages 16 to 17. Cadets work under direct supervision of an officer or adult certified EMT while on duty and gain early exposure to emergency medical service standards.
In 2025, eight former Montgomery EMS cadets were admitted to medical school.
Many cadets continue into healthcare careers and broader leadership roles in society.

Time commitment and expectations
Consistency is part of clinical readiness
EMTs and Drivers are expected to take a consistent pre-assigned weekly shift. Typical shifts are 6 to 12 hours. Regularity matters because skill readiness and team reliability directly affect patient care.
Members are also expected to meet broader participation requirements that support operations, training, and public trust.
